Original!
It is the first word that comes to my mind when I think of this immensely talented actor, Vijay Devarakonda, who shook Telugu film industry with a tide of his best performances. He brought freshness to the industry when it was at the verge of being doomed when most of the movies that were released ended up being just an eye candy. For an outsider, it is tough to create a presence of his/her own in the film industry, and this, in fact, is an open secret known to many. But, his charismatic looks and unconventional dialect has already made Vijay a superstar in the eyes of his fans.
Though he has already appeared in a few movies like Nuvvila, Life Is Beautiful, and Yevade Subramanyam before, the film of his that caught my attention was Pelli Choopulu. This movie came like a breath of fresh air with its light-hearted and close to the real-life storyline. VD’s presence in the film was impressive, and the way he pulled off the role of a lazy dreamer who always tries to find shortcuts to ease out his life is undoubtedly the coolest performance ever! He never looked back after that.
Be it uncanny Prasanth from Pelli Choopulu, the aggressive Arjun Reddy, Nikki from Ye Mantram Vesave, Erra Srinu from Dwaraka or Vijay Anthony in Mahanati; He convinced the audience with his performances that those characters might really exist. Then came the twist in the story; Vijay Devarakonda surprised everyone with his unique role in Geetha Govindam! After playing an earnest and intense role like Arjun Reddy, he suddenly opted to play a character which is a contrast of what he played earlier! Cult to comedy is one heck of a transformation considering the role.
I must admit, it was difficult for me to adjust my eyes to see him play a somewhat comedy-centric role after the intense flick of Arjun Reddy. It took me some time to sink it all in! The touch of humour that runs in the film is spot-on. Geetha Govindam revolves around the life of a young lecturer who falls in love with a girl who gets a negative impression of him due to a series of unfortunate events. After watching VD in Arjun Reddy, I had to watch Geetha Govindam twice to appreciate his versatile acting skills. It is because I was so impressed with his acting in the cult character of Arjun Reddy that I was convinced to the core that he and Vijay Govind roles could not have been played by the same person until I saw the movie again!
I have always heard that actors leave an impression of them in the hearts of their audience but never in my life did I expect that an actor from Tollywood would make me feel that way! I can say without any speckle of doubt in my mind that he is going to be the next big quintessential Superstar of Telugu Cinema; Ahem! One who can actually err…act!
